The Yemen Conflict: A Humanitarian Catastrophe

Ten years of war and their consequences

    Dr. Fatima Al-Rahman 12/10/2025 8 min read

An overview of the complex civil war in Yemen, which began in 2014 and produced one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

    1

    How the conflict began

The Yemen war began as a political transition crisis after the Arab Spring and quickly turned into an armed struggle between the Houthi movement, the internationally recognized government, and a growing web of regional backers. State collapse made the conflict much harder to contain.

    2

    Humanitarian catastrophe

Yemen has faced mass displacement, hunger, disease outbreaks, and the destruction of basic infrastructure. Access constraints, fragmented control, and underfunded aid operations have made the humanitarian response both urgent and chronically insufficient.

    3

    The 2025 ceasefire environment

A relative ceasefire reduced some forms of open combat, but it did not produce a durable peace settlement. Front lines, economic fragmentation, and regional influence networks remain in place, so the country is still vulnerable to renewed escalation.
