    October 7, 2023: The attack

Hamas launched a surprise cross-border attack from Gaza, killing civilians and soldiers in southern Israel and taking hostages back into the enclave. The scale, speed, and brutality of the assault transformed the conflict and triggered an immediate Israeli war response.

    2

    Israel's response

Israel responded with intensive airstrikes, a broad mobilization of reserve forces, and a stated goal of dismantling Hamas's military and governing capacity. The first phase focused on degrading Hamas command structures, air defenses, and launch sites while preparing for a ground campaign.

    3

    The ground campaign in Gaza

As the war expanded into Gaza, Israeli forces pushed into urban districts, tunnel networks, and dense residential areas. The military campaign was shaped by hostage rescue efforts, civilian evacuation orders, and the challenge of fighting an entrenched armed group inside a heavily populated area.

    4

    Humanitarian collapse

The war produced a severe humanitarian emergency: widespread displacement, collapsing health services, shortages of food and water, and repeated disruptions to aid delivery. The scale of civilian suffering became one of the defining political and moral issues of the war.

    5

    International reactions

The attack and the war that followed reshaped regional diplomacy, divided global opinion, and intensified debate over ceasefire demands, hostage releases, and the future of Gaza. The conflict also increased pressure on regional mediators and on Israel's Western partners.
